The GRW story starts in 1989 when the father of current CEO and CFO, Gerhard and Wentzel van der Merwe, made his debut in the transport industry.

After a successful lecturing career in advanced mathematics, Gerrie van der Merwe accepted an invitation to join his brother-in-law’s Worcester-based road tanker transport business.

Three years after acquiring full control of the business, Gerrie was joined by Gerhard and Wentzel, as well as family friend and longstanding business associate Rossouw van Eeden.

After taking delivery of a new road tanker built by a prominent company at the time, the three young entrepreneurs expressed their dismay at the poor workmanship and unacceptable finishes by suggesting to build their own tanks. Gerrie offered to provide the material if the trio would attempt to build a scale model steel tank to his satisfaction. Several months of dedicated and concerted effort followed, and a tank that met their collective expectation and standards emerged.

With great enthusiasm, GRW Engineering was founded in 1996 with the mission to build world-class road tankers comparable to the highest international quality standards.

Almost immediately, GRW came under pressure to build tankers for prominent customers in the wine transportation industry. Its founders have since led the company to market leadership locally and in the UK through their unfailing commitment to product innovation, employing trained and motivated personnel, working closely with customers, teamwork and the upkeep of production and operating standards.

Today they pride themselves in always exceeding the expectations of even the most demanding customer, while looking back on a solid foundation for becoming the number one road tanker manufacturer in the world.
